Munster Club to host Open Day at Clontead herd

07.09.2015

The Munster Aberdeen-Angus Club will hold an Open Day at the Clontead Aberdeen Angus Herd of Eustace and Deirdre Burke, Ballyginnane, Carrigaline, Co. Cork on Sunday, September 13th at 2pm.

The Clontead Aberdeen-Angus herd was established in 2003 with the purchase of two maiden heifers from the Cahirmee herd. These two heifers, Cahirmee Ursula and Cahirmee Tammy, excelled for their new owners and combined to win 36 Supreme Breed Championships and 16 Beef Inter Breed titles on the summer show circuit. A further 6 females were added to the herd from Simon and Madeline O’ Regan’s Springmount Herd and these bloodlines have also had a big impact on the herd.

In the intervening years, the herd has achieved notable successes in both the show ring and the sale yard and is one of the most well-known and successful Aberdeen Angus herds in the Munster region. The reigning 2015 All Ireland Aberdeen Angus Champion comes from the Clontead Herd in the form of the senior show cow ‘Shankill Lady Helton J049’. This impressive 5-year-old cow has won a string of red rosettes over the summer and has a Spring 2015 born bull calf at foot. Other notable champions produced by this herd include former show cow Jesana Western Babe, Clontead Buttons and Clontead Ecco.

The entire yearling crop of calves, including the show calves – Clontead Lexus and Clontead Mickey Moo will be on display on the day. There will also be an opportunity to see offspring from exciting new AI bulls such as Rawburn Boss Hogg, Wall Street Royal Leo, Nightingale El Paso and Goulding Jumbo King in addition to calves sired by stock bulls ‘Goulding Extra’ and ‘Oakchurch Dirk’ – all of which will be on available for viewing on the day.

Other attractions include an open stock judging competition and the announcement of the winners and the presentation of the prizes in the annual Munster herds competition. All Aberdeen Angus breeders, Angus enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle are most welcome on the day. The herd will be signposted from both Riverstick and Carrigaline. For more details please contact open day host, Eustace Burke on 0879321517 or club secretary, Edward Dudley on 0863559210.
