The Munster Aberdeen-Angus Club will host an open day on the farm of Tim & Sheila O’ Brien, Coomnaclohy, Ballyvourney, Co. Cork on Saturday, September 8th at 2pm.
Although not regular exhibitors on the show or sale circuit, the O’ Brien’s Carraig Dubh Aberdeen-Angus herd have been very successful participants of the annual Munster Aberdeen-Angus herds competition and have claimed several 1st prize wins in the small herd category. The Carraig Dubh herd has also won several of the main individual trophies at herds competition level too, with 1st prize wins in the heifer calf, bull calf and cow family categories to their credit over the last few years. On the back of these considerable successes, the event promises to be a great showcase of the Aberdeen-Angus breed and will highlight a commercial, hard-working pedigree herd that can also win accolades and prizes on a consistent basis. No longer a small operation, the herd has increased in size to almost 20 cows and followers presently and will be competing in the medium herd category for the first time this year.
This year’s Munster Aberdeen-Angus Club herds competition will be judged by Mark Wattie of the Tonley Aberdeen-Angus herd in Scotland and the prizes from this year’s contest will be presented at the open day on September 8th. Mark will be in attendance on the day and we look forward to hearing his thoughts on his time in Munster and his reasons for his placings across each of the categories.
As well as the herds competition results, an open stock-judging competition will be run on the day with some top prizes on offer for the eventual winners. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided on site. The farm is located at Renaniree, Macroom, Co. Cork P12 D738 (3 miles from the town of Macroom) and will be signposted on the main Macroom/Killarney road on the day.
