Young beef cattle enthusiasts visiting the Aberdeen-Angus stand (number 42) at this year’s Beef Expo will get the chance to be entered in to a prize draw to win a pedigree heifer, kindly donated to the Society’s industry leading Youth Development Programme (YDP) by Kevin Moores of the Formby, Liverpool-based The Moss herd.
Anyone aged between eight and 24 years old who is interested in learning more about cattle handling, preparation skills for shows and sales, stockjudging and public speaking from some of the industry’s leading stock men, women and experts, is encouraged to sign up to a YDP workshop, which take place across the UK and Ireland this summer.
Commenting on this opportunity, YDP co-ordinator Gayle Bersey explains: “Workshops are a major component of the YDP’s calendar and are hosted on farm or at a showground with a range of trainers and speakers available on the day to offer their advice and share knowledge. Those who turn up to a workshop will be automatically entered in to a prize draw which will be drawn at the National Weekend Event, which takes place in September at the East of England Showground, Peterborough on the 24th and 25th September.
“This heifer is a perfect opportunity to either kick start a new herd or add to a current one and the YDP team are indebted to Kevin Moores at The Moss for offering her. Anyone within the age range can enter, you don’t have to be an Aberdeen-Angus breeder or even have experience of cattle, many who come to a workshop are looking to build on stock skills, so this has the potential to be a great starter package.”
The heifer, The Moss Felucca R323 was born in April 2015 and is by the herd’s stock bull Scholland Wizzard K459 and is out of The Moss Felicia L052, a female sold to the Rawburn herd of Messrs John Elliot, for 7500gns.
Breeder Kevin Moores said: “I’m delighted to be able to offer this exciting prospect to the YDP. The programme is great at both supporting and promoting the next generation of pedigree breeders and I look forward to seeing who the lucky winner will be. Felucca has been bred from one of the herd’s most exciting and highly sought after dam lines and by the time she heads to her new owner will have been AI’d to Raff Hercules, offering a strong pedigree line for a new or established young breeder.”
