Champion tops Dungannon Angus entry at 4,500gns

24.04.2019

There was a strong demand for pedigree Aberdeen-Angus bulls at the breed society’s April show and sale, hosted by Dungannon Farmers’ Mart.

Prices peaked at 4,500gns, and following a complete clearance auctioneer Trevor Wylie reported that 10 lots changed hands to average £3,370 per head – an increase of £523 on last year’s sale.

Claiming the male championship and the day’s top bid of 4,500gns was the January 2018 Cloghogmill Eric U546 brought out by the father and son team of Adrian and Graeme Parke from Strabane. Bred by Robert and Joyce Smyth, he was purchased privately as a two-month-old calf at the foot of his dam, Cloghogmill Emma R244.

Sired by the Friarstown Ideal Pete K2092 son, Cloghogmill Prince Pete R255, he was reserve bull calf champion at the NI Aberdeen Angus Club’s calf show in November 2018. Described by judge Robert Sufferin, Maghera, as a well-made bull with great conformation and breed character, the champion was snapped up by Messrs D and JS Hatrick from Londonderry.

Two lots sold for 4,000gns each.

First to sell was the second placed Drumhill Dazzler T652 ET from Jonathan and Lisa Doyle’s herd at Cookstown. Born in November 2017, he was sired by the Netherallan Peter Pershore E052 son Blelack Equity J127, and is out of the Blelack Blackrod J160 daughter Skaill Diana L596. Ranked in the breed’s top one per cent for milk +25, he sold to Bernard Venny from Downpatrick.

Also selling at 4,000gns was the third prize winning Ballyvaston Elgin U074 from Christopher Strain’s herd at Downpatrick. Sired by Rawburn Enigmatic, this fifteen-month-old entry is out of a home-bred dam by Netherallan Peter Pershore E052. Buyer was Stephen Cargill from Parkgate, Ballyclare.

The reserve male championship went to the January 2018 Denamona Blacksmith U592 bred by Moses Irwin Jnr from Fintona. Sired by Blelack Egotist K531, he was bred from the Camus Eden G431 daughter Denamona Black Bessie K151 – one of 65 cows in the herd. This one came under the hammer at 3,900gns, selling to S Caldwell from Beragh, County Tyrone.

Next best at 3,100gns was the second placed Coolermoney Lord Harry U832 bred by Adrian and Graeme Parke. Born in January 2018, and sired by Hallington Evo L333, this one was bred from Mogeely Lady Hilda N241 – one of nine cows in the Strabane-based herd. Buyer was Ian McKinstry from Upper Ballinderry, Lisburn.

The female championship went to Christopher Strain’s Ballyvaston Lady Thelma U085. Sired by the Rosemead Karona J957 son Ballyvaston Euan S026, she was bred from Drumawhey Lady Tilly J901. This January 2018 heifer sold at 1,000gns to WA Houston from Kilkeel.
