Patrick Playfair-Hannay of Kingsmuir died 31st January 2023 in his 94th year ,peacefully at home.

Born 12th July 1929 in Banstead ,Surrey where his father was a music teacher before moving to Coldstream, Berwickshire to become a market gardener.

Patrick was educated at Corchester Preparatory School before going to Oundle. He completed National Service with the Royal Army Service Corps in Suez. He then went to Ceylon where he became a Tea and Rubber Plantation manager. Home on leave ,he married Frances Roberton from Morebattle Tofts in 1955.

Returning to the UK in 1956, Patrick became a partner in RJ & C Roberton moving to Clifton on Bowmont where he was permitted to keep some of the Tofts Aberdeen Angus herd. Here he evolved the Tofts Polly Pride family as a branch of the Tofts Polly Perkins tribe. This Polly Pride strain have proven good performers and are today at the forefront for Treebridge and Gordon. The influential Belhaven Polestar was the daughter of a Tofts Polly Pride.

Together with the skills of shepherd Jim Scott, Patrick developed the Clifton Flock of North Country Cheviots ( Park type) culminating in 1979 selling Clifton The Maestro to John Elliot ,Rawburn for the record price of £8000, which stood for over30 years. Clifton breeding also provided Royal Highland Show champions for Castle of Mey and St.Johns Wells.

Patrick inherited Hannay of Kingsmuir following the death of his mother. Kingsmuir was an entailed estate in the East Neuk of Fife granted to the Hannay family in 1700.

Patrick served with distinction in many fields including The Association for the Protection of Rural Scotland which he chaired,The South of Scotland Arbiters and Border Valuers Association where carried out many valuations and agricultural arbitrations.
There will be a service in Morebattle Parish Church on Friday 24th February at1 pm to celebrate the life of Patrick.
