The Aberdeen-Angus breed enjoyed a tremendous Great Yorkshire Show, with a strong entry coming forward under judge Mr John Moss of the Curzon Herd, Nottinghamshire, and Blelack Princess Carina X125 from Michael and Melanie Alford, Foxhill Farm, Devon, going on to take the Supreme Beef Interbreed Championship.
The Alfords, of the Foxhill Herd in Devon, took the Breed and Female Championships with Blelack Princess Carina X125. Born in May 2021, she is sired by Kilmaluag Eriskay T203 and out of Blelack Princess Carina U902. After winning the cow class, Carina progressed through the championships before going forward to represent Aberdeen-Angus in the Supreme Beef Interbreed Championship, where she took the overall title.
The Supreme Beef Interbreed Championship was a huge achievement for Michael and Melanie Alford and a tremendous result for the Aberdeen-Angus breed at the Great Yorkshire Show.
The Alford family’s success continued in the male section with Wensleydale Black Voltage Y140, bred by Chris Timm of the Wensleydale Herd. The December 2022-born bull took the Male Championship before standing Reserve Breed Champion and Best Animal of Opposite Sex to the Champion. He is sired by Gretnahouse Blackboot V082 and out of Wensleydale Black Vision V148.
Reserve Male Champion was awarded to Guston Mr Braveheart A668, exhibited by Mr A Gray. Born in January 2024, he is sired by Rawburn Baltimore U845 and out of Melview Miss Bluesky L086.
Brailes Lady Ruth A359 from Messrs R & C Rettie and Mr Jamie Rettie secured the Junior Championship and Reserve Female Championship. The October 2024-born heifer is sired by Tonley Ronald X800 and out of Retties Lady Ruth W148.
Reserve Junior Champion went to Blackrodian Kristina B267 from William Joel Ashworth. Born in February 2025, she is sired by Retties Lord Lucas and out of Morpheus Kit W069.
Michael and Melanie Alford also enjoyed success in the group classes, taking first place in both the Group of Three Animals – property of the same exhibitor, and Pair of Animals – property of the same exhibitor.
The Great Yorkshire Show also saw Aberdeen-Angus voted winner of the People’s Choice Award, with the winning team representing the Wood Moss, Buckhurst and Blackrodian herds – a great result for all involved.
